Hair transplant is one of the most popular cosmetic trends. Typically, those who have male pattern baldness opt for a hair transplant. Others include women experiencing a prematurely receding hairline, trauma or accident, and burn patients. A hair transplant can help people with examples and many more.
Reasons for baldness
Baldness happens only on the scalp and not in other parts of our body like our arms and legs.
In males, a chemical called Dihydrotestosterone present in testosterone impacts hair. If the hair has excess Dihydrotestosterone, the hair will stop growing. Some parts of your scalp are resistant to the negative impact of Dihydrotestosterone, and these areas are used as “donor” regions during a hair transplant.
What Are the Types of Baldness?
There are several types of baldness, common in both men and women.
- Androgenetic Alopecia – The common name for this is “male” or “female” pattern baldness or hair loss. Male pattern baldness can start as early as puberty, and the crown of the head is the most common one. In women, Androgenetic Alopecia causes more overall thinning around their heads.
- Telogen Effluvium – In this type of hair loss, the hair follicles stop producing new hair for growth.
- Alopecia Areata – This autoimmune illness can lead to dramatic and fast-moving hair loss.
Hair transplant principle
Hair follicles from the donor area are taken and added to the balding areas of your scalp. Only one-third or less of your head can be used as a donor area, and a portion of the donor’s hair is used as a “seed” and help other areas of your scalp grow. So it is important to know that the donor portion of your head is not unlimited. The donor site should not look patchy after the transplant, as it wouldn’t make much sense if the surgery replaced one bald region with another.
Full-Coverage Hair Transplant?
“Full coverage” means using a high density of hair grafts to cover bald areas and does not mean “full coverage” over the entire scalp. Experienced doctors will not consider doing lower-density hair transplants merely to try and cover more space over the head. The doctors will not have thin hair spread out as far as possible—but prefer a sculpted look that gets you the most out of what you have to work with.
Most doctors only take about a third of the donor’s hair for grafts since the hair extracted during a hair transplant does not grow back. Since the surgeon is taking out the entire follicle to seed your donor hair into the balding area, so if they extract large parts of the donor’s hair, one bald area gets replaced with another one, so make sure that you and your doctor are on the same page when it comes to covering up large bald areas.
Large Area Hair Transplant
Please understand that no one goes completely bald naturally because of the small Dihydrotestosterone-resistant part of the scalp that everyone has. Some might have baldness everywhere on the head except for the small donor area bald. In those cases, the patient can see some very beautiful results after a hair restoration transplant, but they will not be able to cover their entire head.
The amount of donor hair is lesser than the amount of space that needs to be covered. Supposedly, one has hair on one-third of their head, and the other two-thirds are bald; then, within that small donor area, only one-third can be used.
But in most cases, people have more than enough donor hair to cover their needs.
What is the best Hair Transplant to cover large areas?
At present, there are two most popular and successful hair transplant solutions, and they are – Follicular Unit Extraction and Follicular Unit Transplantation. Both methods are known to deliver results, but there are times when one method may be better.
To cover large bald areas, surgeons prefer the FUT method, but that is also subjective. The only reason to prefer FUT over FUE is that the surgical time is more in FUE.
